After choosing a piece of white china, a subject is then chosen that would suit the piece. After sketching the subject onto the china, I then start to paint using powdered ceramic colours mixed with various mediums including Pine oil, Fat oil, and Turpentine –these are added to the colours so they can be applied to the piece.
After applying as much colour as possible I then fire the piece in my kiln at a temperature of 840 degrees centigrade for six to eight hours.
Once the piece has cooled, more colour is applied to allow the colours to become deep and rich. The piece will be fired again at the same temperature and the process repeated until I feel it has reached its full potential (on average most pieces have three firings.)
When the painting stage is finished I then apply the liquid gold decoration by brush. This is then fired at 770 degrees centigrade for six to eight hours. When cold the gold is then burnished with a damp cloth and silver sand, this slight abrasion polishes the gold. The gold work is like a frame on a picture and finished it of to perfection.
